Problems With Heart Disease

This is something I found interesting.  Intelligence appears to now be connected to heart health and ultimately death related to cardiovascular disease.  Scottish researchers are now saying that poor people are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease because they have lower IQ’s.  Now, as for me, I attributed it to the fact that they might not have the same quality of food availability as people with more money would, and poor people in general might think that prepackaged food was cheaper.

I mean after all, why go to the grocery store and buy apples or otherwise for a few bucks when you could buy a burger at McDonalds on the dollar menu?  Right then, it definitely seems cheaper.  That was my thought.  But apparently Scottish researchers disagree with me.  They officially analyzed 4,289 former US soldiers and found that IQ accounted for the more than 20% difference in heart attacks and strokes between those of high and low socioeconomic status.

It will appear in the July 15 issue of European Heart Journal.  But I wonder, did they compare between those in the low socioeconomic status.  By this I mean did they compare those who happened to have higher IQ’s in that area of society to those with the lower IQ’s in the same area of society.  After all, scientific studies determine a causal link.  But the obvious connection is not always the right connection.

It could have more to do with environment than IQ.  It could have more to do with what is available to them rather than IQ, it could have quite a few causal links.  My curiosity is peaked as to their study of all the possibilities rather than just one.
