People Gain Weight In A Bad Economy

A bad economy has been known to increase stress levels among the general population, even those in higher positions in financial society.  This is been illustrated in the past Presidents of the United States in terms of change in hair color as well as other factors.  In the general population, it seems that many of our bodies start to hold onto more fat, and the population as a whole gains weight.

Whether your stress comes from job loss, long work hours, making ends meet, or just keeping our heads above the proverbial waters, it is during those times of elevated stress that we seem to not only find our bodies to be dysfunctional, but we also find ourselves reaching out toward sources of comfort and relaxation, which often equates itself to food and more often “comfort foods” that are high in fat and low in actual nutritional value.  It provides us with immediate gratification of sorts that we can still afford.  We also being to assume that prepackaged junk food is easier on our budgets, and instead of going out to pricier restaurants, we start to frequent fast food restaurants.

In hard times, we may not be able to afford the luxuries of karate classes, dance classes, or soccer teams for our children.  But we still find ourselves able to afford the high fat fast foods that are so quick, convenient, and we think cheap.  An occasional trip is certainly not the cause of obesity or stress related obesity.  But when it turns into a more regular occasion and a rule rather than the exception, we develop problems that will affect us for years after the recession subsides.

Obesity in general affects our health to a negative degree, resulting in higher levels of depression, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and other health issues that may prevent our future generations from doing the same jobs and providing the same efforts while causing healthcare costs to rise substantially.  And when these patterns start in childhood, it is more likely to cause long term health effects than when occurring first in adulthood.

So for starters, to help your family to keep stress levels down and not suffer the obesity that often comes with a recession, cook at home more often.  It will actually save you money, even though it may take some extra times.  Buy more fruits and vegetables, as you will find your grocery bill will actually go down instead of up when compared to that spent on prepackaged foods.  And start family activities including exercise and activity instead of movies and video games.  We don’t control the economy, but we do control our own health and lives.
